Geography Department's Homework Policy

Homework is set as a project style approach, approximately eight times a year at KS3.

  • These projects are open-ended and will require a varied approach from you. It is your responsibility to work on these projects independently.
  • Projects will be collected in by the teacher on a fixed deadline and whatever work is handed in at this time will be marked accordingly.
  • You should spend at least an hour on your Geography homework each week.
  • The teacher will set additional homeworks to the project as and when required to help further your learning and thinking skills.

How are Geography Homework projects marked?

Some homework's will be levelled using National Curriculum levels, to monitor your progress, and others will be marked using the Geography Department's homework marking criteria, where two marks are given.

  • The first mark is for the Geography content - have you included everything which was needed?
  • The second mark is for your effort - did you try your best?

The Geography Deparment is happy to help support you with anything you don't understand in regards to the homework, as we want you to do your best.

What should I do if I don't understand my homework project?

  • If you have any questions regarding your homework please come and see your Geography teacher as we are always happy to help.
  • The Geography office is located at the end of the top floor F Block corridor. (Come to the door at the back of F4 if you are unsure) Staff are available before school, during lunch time and immediately after school.

  • It is your responsibilty to find staff to gain extra help if you are unsure with what to do regarding homeworks, well before the deadline to the project.

  • Failure to hand in work on the deadline day, with the excuse you didn't understand what to do, will not be accepted. As these extended learning projects run for several weeks, you are expected to work on them weekly. Leaving work till the last minute is not acceptable.

What will happen if I do not hand in my homework?

  • Unless you have a written note from either your parent / guardian or your head of year, excusing you from completing the work due to illness or exceptional personal circumstances, you will have to hand your work in on the deadline.

  • Extensions will be given for those with exceptional circumstances, which must be agreed with your class teacher, where a new deadlinew date will be set.
  • If you do not hand in your work, you will be placed in the after school detention system. The number of detentions given will depend on the length of your homework project, and will be set by your class teacher.

For a six week homework project, you could expect to receive 6 after school detentions, as 6 hours worth of work = 6 x 1hr after school detentions.

  • Detentions may also be given if you have not put enough effort into the work you have handed in. This is because some students may try to hand in a piece of homework in which they have spent 10 minutes on in the hope that they will not have to do a detention, where as they were expected to do 6 hours worth of work and would therefore still receive a number of detentions.

Rewards for Homeworks:

If you have worked hard and put a lot of effort into your homework project you will recieve either a yellow positive achievement slip and/ or a Geography Postcard home, letting your parents/ guardians know how proud we are of your hard work in Geography.

For students who put a lot of effort into more than one homework project, who work consistently hard, additional rewards such as certificates, class prizes and whole school prizes in assemblies or achievement evenings may be given.

In Geography we want you to achieve as high as you possibly can and homework plays an imprtant role in expanding your thinking and research skills.

We want to help! - so come and see a member of staff with any of your homework queries.
